Merry Lent! In the Name of Jesus. Amen. Jesus is with you. He has promised you this when He said “surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (Matt. 28:20). You are baptized children of God. He is with you.
Do you ever think that God is with you so nothing can harm you? Do you cross the street without looking because God is with you? Do you prefer to eat your meat raw instead of cooked because God is with you? Do you drive your car while staring at your phone because God is with you? How about this corona virus? Do you never wash your hands, touch everything you can in Walmart, lick your hands often, or just generally meet with as many people as possible right now? Do you do all this because you know that God is with you? The Psalm tonight, Psalm 91, talks about not being afraid of even deadly pestilences because God will deliver you. It says that no plague will come near you because He will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. How about that? No harm will come to you, even deadly viruses, so go do whatever you like!… right?
Our reading is taking us back to the start of Lent to Jesus’ temptation. In fact, the temptation you have to do anything you want, and God will protect you, is the same one the Devil tried to get Jesus with. The Devil even quotes this exact Psalm, Ps. 91 “He will command His angels concerning you… lest you strike your foot against a stone.” How does Jesus respond? “You shall not put the Lord your God to the test” (Matt. 4:7) . . . Do not test God.
It’s tempting to test God. To make Him prove He really loves us. To ask Him, to miraculously provide us things as signs or to give us whatever we desire. When we ask and we don’t receive we are led to think He’s not with us. 
Then Satan’s temptation has worked. He has led us away from God. He has led us to death. Jesus? He wants us to follow Him. He wants us to KNOW that He is with us no matter what. That life or death, as His own, we will rise again. He is guarding us no matter what happens and will give us life free from viruses and pestilence. How can we KNOW all this? Jesus. God sent Jesus to die on the cross. God sent Jesus to forgive our sin. Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to lead us back to God when Satan leads us astray. God has come to us. And He isn’t leaving. He has promised you life. He has proved His power to do what He says over and over again. The biggest thing He did to prove His love was Jesus on the cross. Jesus is God come to be with us as humans. He is with us during the devil’s temptations. He has died to bring us back. Jesus is with you. That makes this Lent and every Lent. A merry Lent. Merry Lent! In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
